Today’s Tip: Symetrical Design

Often in Art and Design we lean into the power of threes. But there is an interesting exception to that which happens when doing symmetrical design. That’s when the power of twos comes into play. A simple way to understand this is to think about decorating the front porch of a house. With asymmetrical design, you would have for instance a group of three planters full of flowers on one side of the doorway. And if you only put two planters on that side, it would feel awkward and unfinished. However, if you were doing symmetrical design, you would have two planters full of flowers. But instead of putting them on one side of the doorway, you would break the pair and place one on each side of the doorway. This creates a mirrored symmetrical design that is pleasing to the eye.

It’s important when working with designs to be intentional about the overall shape and approach to a project, not just in architectural, interior, fashion, or artistic design. This also applies to software, apps, and data in technology too. Is it asymmetrical or symmetrical that you are going for.

That’s when you create a mirror image of something so that you can work with or manipulate the twin version of it without affecting the original. Although this feels “new” as it is hitting mainstream, the technology has actually been around long before it gained momentum. Now digital twins can more easily give you double the fun!
