Today’s Tip: Movement

Movement can mean a lot of different things in regard to design and innovation. Today, we’ll explore a couple of ways it applies.

In design, there are a variety of ways to take something that would seem flat and very two dimensional and bring movement. One example is a photo, that presents a path into nature, taken from a vantage point which makes you feel as though you are standing in a place ready to start walking down that path. It invites your eyes to go on a journey through nature. And that is creating visual movement in a way that is very welcoming and inviting. It draws you in or gives your eyes a visual dance that feels free and flowing and not stagnant.

Now for innovation, I want to talk about actual movement - a walk, a run, yoga, stretching, working out, or some other physical activity. This kind of movement is so powerful, because not only does it give you an outlet for pent up emotions or thoughts, but it also brings blood flow throughout your body, and more importantly to your brain. So don’t underestimate the power of physical movement when you are trying to accomplish something innovative. It isn’t wasting time, but can actually be an important element in the creative process itself. And if you make it part of your “flow” routine, it can serve as an innovation cue to your brain as well.
